The Hansa Powerade Dusi 2009 is off to a flying start with local legend paddler Michael Mbanjwa winning Day One in a time of 2h47:28, followed by Ant Stott in a time of 2h51:50, and then Shaun Rubenstein in 2h58:04.
The support for the local hero Mbanjwa was overwhelming as he was carried out the water by a huge crowd of local supporters.
Ending off the leaders was a new record with 4 black paddlers in the top 10 of Day One.

Water quality in both Pietermaritzburg and Durban is currently significantly better than it was this time last year. Unless we have a major storm over the upper catchment prior to Thursday morning, the incidence of Dusi guts this year is expected to be low.
In the light of news from Limpopo province, paddlers will also be reassured to know that several different government agencies are routinely checking the rivers in both Maritzburg and Durban for the presence of cholera and none has been found. |

It is not only canoes that will be seen at the Hansa Powerade Dusi this week. The world famous Gabriel Pitts Specials will be doing an air display at Camps Drift 12 midday on Wednesday at the registration. Led by aviation icon, Scully Levine the 3 Pitts special will wow the large audience expected at Camps Drift.
