In the ‘50s and ‘60s communication during the annual Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon was a problem until Ozzie Gladwin, a Natal Canoe Club member, rigged a ham radio into the back of his Chevy.

Families, friends and supporters of paddlers in the Dusi were kept up-to-date through Ozzie’s hourly reports from the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

To mark the contribution that Ozzie made to Natal Canoe Club, the organisers of the Dusi, a race held in late October from Albert Falls to below Shabalalas Farm is named after him. This year the event, which is traditionally the biggest one day canoe marathon in the country doubles as the 2009 KZN K2 trials.

Entries are pouring in for the race with a surprise entry of Ant Stott and Michael Mbanjwa teaming up for the occasion. Canoeing pundits believe that they will be testing out how the pairing works and, if successful, South Africans could see the first black winner of the Dusi and a world champion team up for the Dusi in January.

More sponsorship for Dusi

Hansa and Powerade will extend the Title sponsorship of the Dusi for another 3 years 2011, 2012 and 2013!! This is great news for the event and canoeing. "Both Hansa and Powerade are terrific sponsorship partners to work with and we look forward... to working with them a long time into the future!!!!" said Cameron Mackenzie, chairman of the organisers on the weekend.

Swampscott - Graeme Rockett isn’t out to set any records anymore. He’s just trying to stay in shape and keep up his involvement in the sport he grew up with: kayak racing.

“I do it just to keep fit and keep in the water,” said Rockett, a native of South Africa. “It is one of the things I happen to be good at. If I do train, I do pretty well. Those are the reasons why I do it.”

Rockett most recently won the 9-mile race that was part of the “Run of the Charles” series of races, finishing in one hour, 13 minutes, 52 seconds. Racing in kayaks is something that was very popular on the east coast of South Africa, where Rockett was born and raised, long before moving to Swampscott in the mid-2000s.
