The Dusi Canoe Marathon continues to deliver one of South Africa’s premier endurance sporting experiences, with 91% of participants rating their overall experience positively and an equal number saying they would recommend the iconic race to others, according to the findings of the 2026 participant survey.
The survey, conducted following the 2026 edition of the race, provides valuable insight into what competitors value most while identifying key areas where the event can continue to evolve.
Among the standout findings, 88% of respondents rated the organisation of the event as good to excellent, while communication received the same approval rating. Three quarters of participants (76%) also indicated they are certain to return for another Dusi, underlining the enduring appeal of the world’s most famous canoe marathon.
Participants consistently highlighted the commitment of volunteers as the defining feature of the event, praising the enthusiasm and support provided throughout the three-day race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Competitors also applauded the professionalism of the organising committee, the beauty of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, improved WhatsApp communication and the growing quality of media coverage surrounding the event.
While the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, paddlers also identified several opportunities to further strengthen the race experience. River safety, hydration points, growing participation, improving the experience for first-time competitors and enhancing the race village were among the most frequently suggested priorities.
The findings will help guide the organising committee’s planning for future editions, with a strategic focus on refining operational elements while building on the event’s rich heritage.
Immediate priorities include reviewing river safety protocols, improving hazard marking and evaluating hydration station placement. Longer-term ambitions include expanding national marketing efforts, growing sponsorship opportunities, strengthening digital storytelling and positioning the Dusi Canoe Marathon as Africa’s premier river endurance event.
The survey also reinforces the event’s commercial appeal, highlighting an exceptionally loyal participant base and a strong emotional connection between paddlers and the race. Organisers believe this creates significant opportunities for sponsors through experiential marketing, community engagement, and digital activation.
“The survey confirms what many of us already know, that the Dusi Canoe Marathon remains a bucket-list event that creates lifelong memories for those who take part,” said Dusi Canoe Marathon Chairman Doug Gow.
“While we are incredibly encouraged by the levels of satisfaction recorded, the feedback also gives us a clear roadmap for improvement. We are committed to listening to our paddlers and using these insights to make the Dusi even stronger, safer and more enjoyable for future generations.”
The organising committee will use the survey findings to shape planning for the 2027 edition while continuing to celebrate the event’s unique combination of history, community spirit and sporting challenge.
